What Does HIPAA Mean to Residents?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act became Federal Law in the United States in 1996. The proposed legislation, and subsequent law, is complex and has a great many components. The two most important areas addressed by HIPAA are:

Privacy: HIPAA defines rules regarding the ways your health information may be used and disclosed.

Security: HIPAA requires specific security measures be in place to protect health information that is sent or stored electronically.
